Windows Cannot find Gpedit.msc Error : Solved

In this article, I am going to discuss what Local Group Policy Editor Is? and the solution to the problem of Local Group Policy Editor not showing up when run through typing 'gpedit.msc' in the run box.

What is Local Goup Policy Editor?

The Local Group Policy Editor is a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in that provides a single user interface through which all the settings of Local Group Policy objects can be managed.
Or in Simple Words, it is a feature of Microsoft Windows that allows users to tweak some of their system's settings according to their needs.
Like I want to disable the caching of thumbnails in my Windows 8.1 through tweaking a setting in the policy editor.

Error:

I tried opening up with the traditional method of typing gpedit.msc in the run box but got the following error.
'Windows cannot find gpedit.msc.Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again'.
Even i couldn't find it in the start menu.

Cause of error:

Group Policy Editor feature is provided only with Professional,Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows 7 and Windows 8 and not in basic, starter or home premium versions. So if you are seeing this error its probably because you have a basic, starter or home premium versions of windows7/8/8.1 installed.

How to Fix it?

Here we will be going to install some system files to get the error fixed. Here is a simple third party software which installs the required system files in Windows so that you can enjoy Group Policy Editor in all Windows 7/8 editions.

This utility has been originally compiled by "davehc" @ Windows7forums so the credits for the utility goes to him. There is no copyright on it so feel free to use and distribute.

Steps to Fix :

1. Download the utility from here.
2. Extract it using Winrar or Winzip or 7zip or any compressed file extracter you like and after that double click on the Setup.exe file and install it normally (It'll install the files and you'll be able to access gpedit.msc command via RUN or Start Menu search box.)

Window 64bit Users follow these additional steps :

1. Go to ‘SysWOW64′ Folder located at C:\Windows.
2. Copy "GroupPolicy", "GroupPolicyUsers" folders and gpedit.msc file from there and paste them in "C:\Windows\System32" folder.
3. That's it! All Done.
